The Residency
Application Information
Rutgers Health/NJMS will continue to participate in Preference/Program Signaling (PS) in the 2023-24 residency application cycle through the ERAS Supplemental Application (not Past Experiences or Geographic Preferences). Applications for EM-1 positions are only accepted through the AAMC's ERAS service and we participate in The Match through NRMP. We will accept up to eleven residents per academic year with a four-year-training format.
We conduct a holistic review process such that no single element or failure disqualifies an applicant from consideration. Below is some key information to help you apply (adapted from previous years based on current pandemic-related restrictions):
What you need…
USMLE Step 1 & 2
With the change to Pass/Fail for USMLE Step 1 we encourage, but do not require applicants to complete USMLE Step 2 by October so that it may be part of your review. A USMLE Step 2 score is required for placement on our rank list in February.
COMLEX
We consider applicants from osteopathic schools that have taken the COMLEX and/or USMLE series.
Foreign Medical Graduates
We consider applications from excellent foreign medical graduates, with formal US-based clinical experience/rotations generating an EM rotation SLOE (not including observerships) strongly encouraged. We also will on occasion sponsor exceptional incoming residents for an appropriate visa per our institutional guidelines.
Application Review: Applications are considered complete when the following material is available to us through ERAS
A completed ERAS Application
Medical Student Performance Evaluations (Dean's Letter)
Medical School Transcript
Three or four letters of recommendation from clinical academic faculty, including 1 Standardized Letters of Evaluation (SLOEs) from academic EM faculty.
USMLE/COMLEX transcripts
ECFMG certification (if relevant)
Personal statement
Timeline: The following is a general timeline to our interview process
Application review begins immediately after MSPEs are released by medical schools (September 27th, 2023)
Our first set of interviews will be released per the Unified Interview Release dates as finalized by the CORD County Community of Practice:
October 18th, 2023 (county program common release date): Interview invitation notifications sent via Thalamus (6pm EST) and scheduling opens the following day
Additional interview offers will be sent on a rolling basis following this date
Early-November to January: Interviews (weekly on Thursdays, except during holiday weeks)
We continue to review applications/updates over the entire interview season and maintain an active waitlist.
Due to the high volume of applications we are unable to individually inform candidates if their application is still under review or if we are unable to extend an interview offer.
Interview
Based on current AAMC and other recommendations all interviews will continue to be conducted virtually only using the Thalamus video platform and/or Zoom.
Our residents host a pre-interview virtual social event around the interview day
Previous years:
The interview letter you receive will have information regarding discounted hotel rates in the Newark area.
Peri-interview social: Our residents host candidates for a virtual social event around the interview day. This is not a mandatory event - while we encourage everyone to attend, we recognize that there may be conflicting events and inability to attend is not held against you. If you do not hear details about this by a week before your scheduled interview date please contact our Program Coordinator.
Interview day: Interviews are conducted virtually only on Thursdays from approximately 7:30am - 3:30pm in two groups. Candidates meet with 3-4 faculty members and 1-2 residents.
While we understand that some cancellations are inevitable, we strongly encourage you to cancel your interview with at least 2 weeks notice - this not only gives another candidate the opportunity to fill your slot, but also allows them to make travel plans, etc.
Post-Interview
We are unable to consider requests for in-person visits and/or second looks prior to rank list submission based on institutional and AAMC recommendations
We strictly abide by the NRMP rules and will not give you indication before, during or after your interview regarding your potential spot on the rank list.
If you have any further questions regarding the application process please feel free to contact us through ERAS.
