Andragogy, the method and practice of teaching adult learners, is a dynamic and evolving science in the medical education domain.
The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to offer a novel two-year medical education fellowship centered on adult learning. The three major pillars of this educational experience encompass the educational, experiential and clinical realms.

We can. Our UME track will provide you multiple hands-on educational opportunities with our diverse UME faculty.
Graduate Medical Education
If you always wanted to work in a EM residency program and mold the next generation of residents, our Med-Ed fellowship will prepare you for this calling.
Your career path may include an assortment of educational positions in residency leadership positions, Med-Ed fellowship director, curriculum developer, Vice Chair/Chair of Education, or DIO in your career arc.
Through an intensive blend of GME activities, advising, meetings and direct committee work, we will equip you for these career possibilities.
Innovation in Education
How do you learn to be an innovator in education?
We place a premium of engaging with our local neighborhood and better understanding the social determinants of health to improve the health of our Newark community. Fellows will gain mastery in teaching and continually integrating these crucial concepts back to your learners.
What skills are necessary in your educational toolkit?
During the fellowship, time will be provided to learn and develop concrete skillsets such as curriculum development, simulation instruction, learning management systems (LMS) for coursework, and social media/podcasting capabilities.
Academic Content
Our fellows will receive a Masters in Adult and Continuing Education through the Rutgers Graduate School of Education. Coursework includes a capstone educational research project.
One-on-one mentorships and discussion with medical educators throughout the field will augment traditional academic content.
Regional & National Conferences/Courses
Fellows are expected attend multiple conferences each year for exposure to various sectors of medical education
- Written & Oral Board review class
- 1st Year CORD Navigating the Academic Waters track & choice of ACEP, SAEM, or AAEM national conference
- 2nd year choice of AAMC or ACGME national conference
- Attendance at regional NJ ACEP and ANSER meetings
- Planning and implementation for Rutgers NJMS regional NJ Consortium Annual Conference
